Project scope and field context
This project was executed by ATI Panamericana, S.A. an affiliate of Ambient Technologies, Inc. in Florida. The work was performed for the GUPC Consortium during the period between 2009 and 2013. The project estimated cost was $12 Billion. It included the construction of two locks with water recycling basins, relocation of several embankments and construction of a new bridge. The project was on the Atlantic side and the Pacific side, occurred concurrently and, the two areas had completely different geological conditions. ATI mobilized by cargo ship five drill rigs and three trucks from Florida to Panama and hundreds of feet of steel rods and drill bits. Initially the work was coordinated by professional staff and a USA based driller until local Panamanian driller and assistants were employed. Geologic logs was prepared for all borings. There were more than 30 employees based in Panama City. During this period our revenues exceeded $4,000,000. The work consisted of the performance of hundreds of geotechnical borings on land and on water to a depth of 15 ft to over 300 ft deep. Thousands of feet of HQ size coring was accomplished and hundreds of piezometers installed. Permeability and shear testing was performed in situ. Numerous settlement monitoring point and inclinometers were installed in strategic areas. Our geophysical investigation consisted of seismic surveys to locate and define areas of geological faults zones and determine top of rock. Marine surveys were used to determine bottom profiling and top of rock in the bottom of the Canal and in the new bridge area.
